My Conflicted Relationship With Generative AI

If you’re like me, you’re probably trying to come to grips with all the uncertainty around generative AI and the changes it’s about to unleash on digital marketing and PR.

Likely the expression, ‘it’s complicated’, comes to mind.

And while there are many nuanced factors, here are two quotes I believe capture the heart of our struggle.

The first is by bestselling author and professor Yuval Noah Harari.

“AI has gained some remarkable abilities to manipulate and generate language, whether with words, sounds or images. AI has thereby hacked the operating system of our civilisation.”

The second is from Turing Prize winner and Meta’s chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun.

“[AI is] missing something really big … to reach not just human level intelligence, but even dog intelligence … Until we can do this, we are not going to have human-level intelligence, we are not going to have dog-level or cat-level intelligence.”
